Mesiri paste was made for Ayse Hafsa Sultan, mother of Suleiman the Magnificent and wife of Yavuz Sultan Selim. It is also known as Ottoman paste. When Hafsa Sultan fell ill, Zentrum Efendi, the leading physician at the time, prepared this paste and sent it to the palace. Hafsa Sultan recovered her health in a short time. Hafsa Sultan announced that a paste would be prepared to be distributed to the entire public along with the directive. This tradition is still kept as the Mesir Paste Festival. This festival, which belongs to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage category, is organized in Mersin.
