Althaea infusion of marshmallow is used for inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract and pharynx, accompanied by difficult coughing up of sputum, inflammation of the tonsils and soft palate, and tracheitis. Althaea preparations reduce cough, increase mucus production and facilitate the evacuation of sputum.

Althaea root is used for catarrhal conditions of the esophagus, gastritis, peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, especially in cases accompanied by diarrhea.

Althaea preparations are also used for influenza, jaundice, enterocolitis, and enuresis. Usually, an infusion, decoction or syrup from the root is used, as well as the root in the form of powder and dry extract.
How to use marshmallow root:

     To prepare the infusion, finely chopped Althaea root with particles no larger than 3 mm in an amount of 6.5 g. pour 100 ml of water at room temperature, leave for 1 hour and take a tablespoon every 2 hours.

     The decoction is prepared in the usual way. It is especially recommended to use marshmallow for catarrh of the respiratory tract in children. The decoction is given a teaspoon or dessert spoon 4-5 times a day.

     The composition of marshmallow syrup includes 2 g. dry Althaea root extract and 98 g. sugar syrup. It is prepared as follows: dry Althaea extract is scattered on the surface of the sugar syrup in a thin layer and, after the extract swells, mix well while heating.

      A cold infusion (decoction) is prepared from chopped Althaea root, in which only the mucus is extracted (6 grams of root per 200 ml of water).

Althaea root contraindications:

individual intolerance.
